This week I had the pleasure of visiting the microbrewery le Grimoire in Granby. The brewery found the light of day in March of 2004 when Sebastien Dancause, a co-founder, read an article about a microbrewery that was selling all of its equipment. Sebastien set up operations at 223 rue Principale in Granby which still exists today. You can eat a fine meal while savoring their beers.
In the beginning only three beers were available: la Vitale, la Grimousse, and la Noirceur. Today, those three beers are still available along with thirteen regular beers and eight limited edition brews.
Worth mentioning are two beers which have received honorable mention: La Deserable (a maple-flavored amber beer, 7%, 20 IBU) which won la coup de cœur at the Bieres et Saveurs de Chambly in 2012; the People’s Choice gold medal at the Mondial de la Biere in 2016; and a silver medal in 2017 at the Concours International de Lyon.
The second beer- La Vie de Château won the People’s Choice award at the Mondial de la Biere in consecutive years (2012 and 2013). La Vie de Château was also winner of its category at the World Beer Award in 2016. This year at the Festival de la Biere- Cote Nord, the microbrewery la Grimoire won the People’s Choice award!
In 2015 the microbrewery acquired ownership of a brewery plant located at 1546 rue Principale. Like all microbreweries, they had to be patient while working hard to get the permits necessary to open the locale.
Though the beer sampling room is not yet open to the public, you can still purchase their beer, their glasses, and other articles, as well as material and starter kits for the apprentice in you.
With this new building, le Grimoire can now brew 38,400 HL/year,while using only Canadian and Quebecois ingredients which together create perfect beers. With over four hundred sales outlets, their beers can be found in all provinces of Canada. and overseas in France.
